Can Hydrogen Peroxide Reduce the Complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection?

If hydrogen peroxide is able to kill COVID-19 from surfaces effectively, then is it possible that hydrogen peroxide as mouthwashes or nasal sprays will kill off COVID-19 and prevent people from getting the disease?

A recent study conducted in Mexico City answers just that. During their trials to find out if hydrogen peroxide can be used as a treatment plan for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, the researchers allowed COVID-19 caretakers to have hydrogen peroxide nasal sprays and mouthwashes. According to the study, none of the 28 caretakers showed any signs of the COVID-19 virus! Although it is worth noting that the results could be subjected to error (if caretakers already were wearing masks that can protect against COVID-19), there is enough reasoning to suggest hydrogen peroxide may help prevent COVID-19. Moreover, many other articles point out that hydrogen peroxide mouthwashes and nasal sprays are completely safe to use. So it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Hydrogen Peroxide as an Adjuvant Therapy for COVID-19

We have seen how hydrogen peroxide can effectively kill COVID-19 from different surfaces and equipment. But how effective is it when it comes to treating people who are already affected by the COVID-19 virus? A similar question was asked by researchers in Brazil and Mexico, and here is what they have found.

According to a recent study conducted in the metropolitan area of Mexico City, hydrogen peroxide was given as mouthwash (1%), nasal spray (0.2%), and ingestive (0.06%) along with the other regular medications.  About 23 COVID-19 patients, along with 28 caretakers, were under inspection. The effects of hydrogen peroxide were monitored until the patients fully recovered. The researchers found out that the patients given hydrogen peroxide recovered fully in about 9.5 days, which is better than the average 14 days. Moreover, the researchers RECOMMEND using hydrogen peroxide as adjuvant therapy in hospitals because of its ease of use and cost-effectiveness. However, the investigators noticed one side-effect: nausea, dizziness, and vomiting in people who took hydrogen peroxide mouthwash.

On the other hand, similar research conducted in Brazil did not find any substantial evidence to suggest hydrogen peroxide as an auxiliary treatment for hospitalized COVID-19 patients. However, the researchers declared that hydrogen peroxide mouthwash and nasal spray are completely safe to use!

What Concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide is Best Against the Virus?

Hydrogen peroxide is available in a variety of concentrations. It ranges from the feeble 0.5% to the industrial-grade 90%. The latter one is so strong that aeronautical companies use it for rocket fuel!

However, when it comes to household applications, the most commonly available one is the 3% hydrogen peroxide concentration. At this concentration, hydrogen peroxide is safe enough to be used at homes as well as adequate to kill off germs properly. Many researchers also recommend using 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to clean surfaces from COVID-19.

On the other hand, if hydrogen peroxide is to be used for the body, as in nasal sprays or mouthwashes, research says a 0.5-1% concentration of hydrogen peroxide is more than enough!

You Must Take Safety Precautions!

However, this does not permit them to be careless with it. Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant chemical, after all. And if someone is not careful enough, it may burn the skin.

First things first, make sure to use gloves when wiping the surface with hydrogen peroxide, especially if you are going for a deep clean and suspect that it will take a while with hydrogen peroxide use. Although 3% hydrogen peroxide is safe for skin, your skin starts to absorb it at more extended periods, which can harm the inner structures.

This goes without saying. Avoid contacting hydrogen peroxide with your eyes or nose. It can cause severe itching and redness of the eyes and lead to respiratory distress if inhaled at higher concentrations. The hydrogen peroxide used in inhalers is 0.5% which is further diluted.
