Food-grade hydrogen peroxide is a chemical product supplied to a particular specification. The term describes product quality for certain controlled applications; it does not mean safe to ingest or suitable for health treatment.
Grade and Concentration Are Different
Concentration describes the amount of hydrogen peroxide in a solution. Grade describes a set of product specifications. Do not assume every food-grade product has the same concentration, ingredients, or permitted uses. Check the product label, Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and available supplier documentation.
A product sold as 35% hydrogen peroxide is concentrated and requires appropriate handling controls. It is not interchangeable with a ready-to-use household cleaning product.
Nonmedical Industrial Applications
Hydrogen peroxide is used in industrial oxidation, bleaching, and cleaning processes. Appropriate use depends on the equipment, materials, concentration, and process controls. Food-processing applications require an authorized product and a validated process for the specific use.
A food-grade description does not establish permission to apply concentrated peroxide directly to food or use it as a general disinfectant. Follow applicable product labeling and qualified technical guidance.
Product Documentation
Review the concentration-specific SDS before handling. A Certificate of Analysis (COA), when available for the product or lot, reports relevant specification results. Neither an SDS nor a COA is an approval for a medical use or proof of effectiveness against a particular disease.
Not a Health Product
Do not ingest, inhale, inject, or use hydrogen peroxide as a medical, dental, or veterinary treatment. Do not follow drinking, gargling, or other treatment recipes. Dilution and the food-grade label do not make those uses appropriate.
Handling and Storage
Peroxide is an oxidizer. Concentrated solutions can cause severe skin burns and eye damage and can intensify fire. Prevent skin and eye contact and avoid breathing mist or vapor. Use the protective equipment and ventilation specified in the product SDS.
Keep the product in its original labeled container, away from heat, direct sunlight, and incompatible materials, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not heat it or mix it with other chemicals as an improvised cleaning method.
If Exposure Occurs
Follow the product SDS and seek immediate advice from a poison center or medical professional. Do not induce vomiting or improvise treatment. Provide the product label and SDS to the professional advising you.
