Upholstery Cleaning Codes: What W, S, WS and X Mean

Table of Contents

A W or WS cleaning code on a sofa does not, by itself, approve hydrogen peroxide. The letters help identify a cleaning category; you still need the furniture maker’s instructions for that piece and the directions for the exact cleaner you plan to use.

If you are looking at a stained cushion and wondering what its tag allows, start here. This guide explains four common upholstery codes and the questions they leave unanswered, without recommending a homemade cleaning mixture.

Find the care instructions for the right part of the furniture

Look for the furniture’s care tag and model information. Ashley says its upholstery tags are beneath a seat cushion or under the unit. Its furniture care guide lists several codes beyond the four below, so an unfamiliar marking is a reason to look up the maker’s guidance rather than guess.

Identify what you want to clean: the fabric attached to the furniture, a cushion cover, or a separate slipcover. Ask for instructions for that component. Do not assume a zipper means the cover can go in a washing machine.

W, S, WS and X: a quick reading guide

The category descriptions below summarize Ashley’s published guidance. Use them to understand the tag, then check the instructions for your own furniture before selecting a product.

CodeCleaning categoryWhat still needs checking
WWater-based upholstery shampoo or foam; no solvent spot cleaning.Which cleaner and method the maker allows. W alone does not approve peroxide.
SDry-cleaning solvent only; no water. The specified product and professional-care guidance. Do not substitute a water-based cleaner.
WS or SWListed upholstery shampoo, mild-detergent foam or mild dry-cleaning solvent.Which option fits the item’s directions. The alternatives are not instructions to combine products.
XVacuuming or light brushing only; no water- or solvent-based cleaner.Who to ask about a mark that remains. Do not improvise a liquid spot treatment.

Read beyond the letter: a manufacturer example

La-Z-Boy’s W instructions specify water-based shampoo or foam for spot cleaning. They also advise against saturation, do not recommend hot-water extraction or steam cleaning, and say cushion covers should not be removed and laundered. Those additional limits matter just as much as the W. See La-Z-Boy’s fabric care instructions.

This is a manufacturer-specific example, not a rule that every W-coded sofa has identical instructions. If an online cleaning tip conflicts with the directions for your furniture, stop and ask the maker to clarify. A generic code chart cannot settle that conflict.

Does a water-based code allow hydrogen peroxide?

Neither of the manufacturer guides cited here gives blanket approval to use bottled hydrogen peroxide on W- or WS-coded upholstery. A cleaner’s ingredient name, the fabric’s color, or someone else’s successful stain-removal story does not establish suitability for your furniture.

Before choosing a peroxide-containing cleaner, check that its directions cover the intended upholstery and task and that the furniture’s instructions allow it. If either is unclear, ask for guidance rather than selecting a concentration or inventing a dilution.

Follow any compatibility-test directions supplied by the manufacturer or cleaner. Treat a test as part of an allowed method, not a way to override a restriction. This guide does not recommend bottled peroxide, a mixture, or a cleaning-machine solution for your sofa.

Missing tag? Prepare a useful care request

Give the furniture maker or a qualified upholstery cleaner enough information to identify the item and understand the problem. You can copy and complete this note:

My furniture is [brand and model, if known]. The affected part is [attached upholstery, cushion cover or separate slipcover]. I have attached photos of the item, any tags and the mark. The mark appeared [when]; its cause is [known cause or unknown]. Products already used are [names, or none]. Please confirm the care instructions for this component and whether [exact cleaner name] is appropriate. If not, what professional care do you recommend?

Keep the reply with your care instructions. If the maker cannot identify the fabric or the mark needs an in-person assessment, you will already have the information ready for a professional.

Quick questions about upholstery codes

Are WS and SW different?

Ashley lists the same spot-cleaning options for both. Confirm how your own furniture maker uses the code rather than treating the letter order as a universal rule.

Can I wash a cover if it unzips?

Only follow washing instructions that apply to that cover. La-Z-Boy’s W guidance specifically says not to remove and launder cushion covers, so removability alone is not enough.

What if I cannot find any code?

Use the brand and model to request the care instructions. If the furniture cannot be identified, seek a qualified upholstery cleaner’s assessment instead of assuming W, WS or another code.

For marks elsewhere in the home, our surface-first household stain guide helps separate fabric, carpet, stone and finished-floor questions. For upholstery, keep the decision tied to the exact item, its care instructions and the intended cleaner.
